There is no doubt that the following two things annoy me more than anything in the world: 1) When the Cowboys win Tony Romo receives too much credit. When they lose he receives way too much criticism. 2) Cowboys fans who think they want Wade Phillips to fail so we can fire him and hire Shanahan, Cowher, or Gruden. Let me set the record straight.
The reason Romo looked like such a hero last week was because his offensive line gave him time to make plays down the field. Even though I think Romo is a great player and will silence his critics this season, the Cowboys win in Tampa had more to do with the offensive line and special teams than sensational QB play. Romo made the throws when he needed to and when you added up the big plays his stats looked great for fantasy owners (real Cowboys fans liked the zero turnovers in the stat-line more than the yards or TD's). On the flip side, when the Cowboys lose, Romo takes all the heat even though football is the ultimate "team" game. Romo critics need to relax when the Cowboys lose and look a little deeper into the reason why the offense was unsuccessful. I guarantee there is more than meets the eye if Romo is playing poorly. The media sensationalizes the QB position and it is even more magnified when you play QB for the Dallas Cowboys. But the bottom line is that Romo is a stud. He can make all the throws. He is slippery in the pocket and knows how to keep plays alive. Romo just needs to step it up in December and January and log some postseason wins. And I have no doubt that he will. Idiots who truly dog Romo and think he is a bum obviously don't know what they are talking about. Peyton Manning and a number of other marquee NFL quarterback's needed a few seasons to get the postseason monkey off their back. As soon as Romo gets some big wins, he will be glorified to a sickening level. And all of you haters will have to eat crow and watch ESPN talk about Romo 24/7.
#2. Whether they know it or not, Cowboys fans need Wade Phillips to succeed this season. The franchise needs to keep its continuity and push forward. The Cowboys don't need a strong willed, veteran coach to come in and make wholesale changes in order to have "their guys." If we can win the next few years under Wade, Jason Garrett will be able to make a smooth transition into the head coaching position and hopefully perpetuate the continuity of the franchise. The Cowboys have a good roster and enough young talent to build around. Be careful what you ask for because you just might get it. And if the Cowboys fail this year and Bill Cowher (or Gruden/Shanahan) is at the helm in 2010, the Cowboys will be set back two more years as they find their footing with a new coach who will surely overhaul the roster. Go Cowboys!
