Could Marshall be a Harbaugh Guy?

One of the major focal points surrounding the Ravens’ offseason is their situation at wide receiver. An overwhelming amount of fans believe that the one thing between the Ravens and a Super Bowl run is a true deep threat. To this point all eyes have been intently focused on the situation brewing in Glendale Arizona involving disgruntled Cardinal receiver Anquan Boldin. Despite speculation, insider reports, and even an agent change, Boldin remains a Cardinal and the Ravens continue to lack a big play wide-out. My take on the situation: the Cardinals always held the upper hand and insincerely entertained trade offers knowing that no team would pay the king’s ransom they were asking for him. Furthermore, anyone who knows Boldin’s game realizes he’s not a true deep ball receiver; he’s a YAC man who undoubtedly benefits from having Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston pulling double coverage away from him. Derrick Mason averaged more yards per catch (13) than Boldin (11.7) did in 2008.

The whispers of Boldin to the Ravens have since been squelched, but the latest from the rumor mill has Denver’s Brandon Marshall entering the Ravens crosshairs. Reports are that Josh McDaniels and company have officially alienated their young wide receiver. Marshall has reportedly requested a trade from Denver. Question: could the Ravens use a 25 year old 6’4, 230lbs. wide-out who has hauled in over 100 receptions and amassed over 1,200 receiving yards in the last two seasons? Answer: Yes! The problem with Marshall is off the field where he has been arrested several times, the latest incident involved a violent spat with his fiancée on March 1, 2009. Could a player with such a checkered background become a John Harbaugh “Might Man”? Would the Denver Broncos let such a young talent get away? What do you think Baltimore?

  1. This guy is a will be in jailhouse stripes soon. He could never play for Harbaugh!!!!!!!

  2. If we get Marshall, I’m flying out to Vegas immediately to bet on the Ravens winning the Super Bowl….He may be the 3rd best receiver in the NFL behind Fitzgerald and Andre Johnson

  3. I agree that he is one of the best in the NFL, but he is a complete and utter knucklehead in every sense of the word. He would clash with Harbaugh and the new Raven way, plus we’d probably have to give a 1st and 3rd. I’m gonna have major mixed emotions if we get him, because the thought of Flacco airing it out to Marshall is a beautiful thing…that being said, I would dread the first time he violates the league drug testing policy, beats up his girl friend, or misses a game b/c he punched his 50 inch plasma TV.

  4. I’m completely on board with getting him, lewis and reed aren’t getting any younger, lets give up the picks and go after the Super Bowl this year…ray ray and mason will keep marshall out of trouble

  5. I have absolutely no gripes about giving up the picks, but I really think he could be more trouble than he’s worth…plus he reportedly wants a new contract. I can’t say that I won’t be excited if he becomes a Ravens, but I’m still cautious.

  6. I don’t know guys…if you pick up a guy like Marshall, the biggest concern you’re going to have is actually getting him on the field. You could throw all the names in the world out there from a leadership standpoint and that’s not going to stop him from putting back a bunc hof MGD’s on Baltimore Street on a given night. I’d venture to say that he could get in a lot more trouble here than in Denver especially given Baltimore’s close proximity to D.C. on top of some of the temptations in Bmore itself.

Beyond that, I agree with Jimbo that this guy is a top 3 receiver in the league and only capable of getting better. He’s had 206 Receptions over the past 2 years which is just filthy.

That being said, sequals usually don’t live up to the original and I’d venture to say most Bronco fans didn’t like the first movie this off-season involving Jay Cutler moving on to the windy city. There is absolutely no way that the Broncos let this guy go. Fans there would be in an absolute uproar. Can you imagine Kyle Orton throwing 8 yard outs to Eddie Royal all season long? If Josh McDaniel’s wants to keep his job for more than a year and if Pat Bowlen wants to remain the favorite son of Denver (after Elway that is), they will make sure Marshall remains a Bronco.

This is one situation where I would not be shocked to see them re-work his contract to make him happy.

  7. The Broncos still have egg on their face from the Cutler situation, so they aren’t going to let another young star skip town.

  8. I’m going to stick by my original stance that the Ravens aren’t going to trade for Marshall and that it is probably for the best. He’s like your boy’s hot ex-girlfriend hitting on you during last call, it’s tempting, but ultimately a very bad idea. Reports now have the Bears and Browns interested in him…I want to keep him as far away from the AFC North as possible, so I’m pulling for Chicago. Players like Marshall who are too selfish, stupid, and/or undisciplined to protect the privilege that is playing in the NFL are most of the time too selfish, stupid, and/or undisciplined to do what it takes to be a winner in the NFL.

    • I still think we should get him…We would have a top 5 receiver corps in the NFL with Marshall/Mason. And if Mason gets hurt again, Marshall/Clayton would be solid as well. Can you imagaine if we don’t get Marshall and Mason gets hurt? I would hate to go into a game with Clayton/Williams as our starting receivers.

Bears may want Marshall, but they’re not going to get him because they don’t have anything to trade. They already traded too many draft picks to the Broncos for Cutler.

      • Why don’t the Ravens just sign Plax and Donte while they’re at it? Is Burt Reynolds available? They could be the most felonious team in the league…

  9. Hey Tim just worry about toughening up your fan base

  10. Guys all heart man…I think there’s a clip somewhere out there of a Ravens fan crying right after Stoney Case got cut…
